More A-Rod

According to this article, A-Rod admitted successfully attempting to distract the Toronto third baseman late in last night's game. While this is far from cheating, it always reminds me of the guy who verbally bluffs at a poker game. The guy who gets his cards, looks at them, sees two aces and says "Oh, man, I never get anything" or some such nonsense before going on to win the hand.

It's just really pathetic.

Just another example of how A-Rod is no Jeter.

OBVIOUS: JAYSON STARK SUCKS

In this deeply researched piece, Jayson Stark names those who he considers the ten most overrated in the game today.

His list isn't so bad, but read through his explanations. It's incredibly sad how he has to kiss the ass of everyone of the guys he puts on there. As he begins:

"I never set out to be The Ultimate Czar of Overratedness and Underratedness. It just happened. One minute, I was merely an ordinary guy, typing his Rumblings and Grumblings. The next, I was pounding on a keyboard, bound for authorhood. Overrated-underrated authorhood."

Jayson, one word: You're an ass.

Barry Zito: "Not that it's some kind of disgrace for any team to say it employs this guy. Never misses a start. Logs those innings. Snaps off those picturesque curveballs. Leads the league in likability. And we admire him for all of those qualities."

JD Drew: "Nobody denies that Drew has massive talent oozing out of his eyebrows. You can tell because he entered this season as one of only 13 active players with a career slugging percentage over .500 and an on-base percentage over .390."

Andruw Jones: "For the record, I like Andruw. He could play for my team any time. And he's one of the best center fielders I've ever laid eyeballs on."

Juan Pierre: "And that brings us to Pierre, a fellow so likable, it pains me to put him on this list. How can you not like a guy who loves baseball so much, he beats the grounds crew to the ballpark?"

I nominate Jayson Stark as the most overrated sports journalist in history. And I have nothing even half nice to say about him, except that he looked a lot better with a mustache.

We can finally shut the door on Carl Pavano. He's undergoing Tommy John surgery June first. Dr. James Andrews will be heading up the procedure. Cheers to those who voted "out for season." Well done.

Is it time to fire Torre? This team isn't just bad, it's listless. There are just too many blank stares in that dugout, and none blanker than TAJT's.

God knows I love Joe Torre. He's a wonderful person and a hall of fame manager. But for the first time I'm really on the fence about his future.

BREAKING: ANDREWS TO MASSAGE PAVANO

Sounds like Pavano is heading down to Birmingham for some one on one treatment with none other than Dr. Andrews. Andrews is the same person, you might remember, who turned Ruben Sierra from a Mexican league disappointment into one of the most virile bench players since Rod Johnson regularly came off the bench for the Chicago Cubs in the late 1970s.

This is big, grand news.

Great Night for Hughes

Now this is why everyone is excited. In a strange way, I'm actually glad he pulled a hammy and will miss about a month. This way, he can be used to pitch more later in the year without overworking his arm. Hopefully, he will only have to throw a few more innings then he did last year. On the other hand, maybe the theory about the firing of the conditioning coaches have merit, because the Yanks are pulling something every day.

Meanwhile, 75 Frank Torre has received a kidney from his daughter. Can anyone say "selfish"? Maybe that will inspire the team to go from terrible to mediocre.

In other news, Roger is supposed to make a decision by May 31. Does anyone else hope he goes to Boston? It would be such a kick in the crotch to us, and I think we should turn this into a season of self-loathing.
