Betemit?

This guy isn't bad--he's got a .800+ OPS, in the national league--but why? We have Giambi coming back next week who will either play first base or split time with Damon at DH, putting a good bat on the bench either way. We hae Andy Philips who has played very well--so well that he's now a member of War Powers. And we have Cairo, who always plays well. And, we traded Proctor, who, while not great, is far better than Farnsworth.

I guess it's time for Joba and Chris Britton to make their move. That's got to be what Yankees Co. is thinking.

But I don't care for it.

Betemit is only 25, and can play every infield position. That's not so bad. Assuming that Britton or Chamberlain or Williamson or one of these AAA guys could fill Proctor's role, I retract my displeasure.

I'm surprised how many times I've recently heard the punditry class say that the Yankees are a long shot to make up 4 games with a 1/3 of the season left. That doesn't seem like that many to me, even though we only play Cleveland three times.

Note: We've made up three games the last two weeks. There are nine weeks left in the season. And with Hughes coming back, Devon Stuart..err...I mean the Yankees have a great chance to win.

I'm betting on Red all the way.

Anyone else surprised the Yankees didn't get a pitcher or 2? While I was not for trading Proctor, Betemit brings some youth off the bench. If he can learn to play the outfield he would be golden. If only he could pitch.

The '90s dynasty had the pitching. It's pretty sad when it's 10+ years later and you're still relying on those same few pitchers.

There's always waivers.

I was hoping the Yankees made a play for a top flight reliever, but I think they must feel Britton/Chamberlain/Williamson/Ramirez made Proctor expendable. I guess we'll see if they are right. But I think we can all agree that it's great that we didn't dump good prospects for second rate veterans, as is often our custom.

Only three games down...
