Looking Ahead

What a first half. What unwatchable baseball. This team has sucked the life out of this blog, and I think many fans are just simply bored senseless with this team.

The Yankees stand 10 games behind Boston and 7 behind Detroit/Cleveland/Seattle for the Wildcard. It's obviously a tough road for a couple of reasons. One, we only have 6 games left with Boston, and none until late August (but what great interleague baseball!).

As for the Wildcard, it's tough because there isn't just one team to beat. One of those teams will win the AL Central, but we still need to finish ahead of Seattle and the other. Those two teams and the Yanks being in different divisions, it also means we'll have limited games against them, and zero in the last four weeks of the season.

So the Yanks are in extra trouble, because we won't control our own destiny.

I'd say we're frigged big time.

The Yanks have 8 games left against Detroit, 3 against Seattle and 3 against Cleveland.

We've got to beat up on Detroit and hope Seattle cools.

The Yankees have to stay consistent. None of this false hope where they win 8 in a row then lose 8.

They need to get some guys hitting - Damon, Cano, Phillips. I'll throw Cabrera in there as well because if he's playing CF (and he should since Damon can't throw past the cutoff man) then he needs to hit in the .275-.280 range not the .250-.260 inconsistent range.

They need some consistent starting pitching - Wang, Pettitte, Mussina, Clemens can get the job done. Igawa either has to be average or get out because 1 guaranteed lousy start every 5 games won't cut it now.

The bullpen has to find out who can get the job done and who should be carrying Rivera's bags.

This is a year that surprising. There are 6-8 teams that could be sticking it out so good players via trades will be hard to come by. Any of the contenders could win the division by a few games.

If the Yankees expect to make the playoffs, they need to beat everyone like the mafia beats someone that owes them money.

There is no retreat, there is no surrender. And they need to start pissing lightning and crapping thunder.

Interesting stuff, gents but let's look at the "intangibles" for a sec--

The Yanks rattle off an impressive winning streak over a month ago and return to their doldrums immediately. Winning seems to be this team's anomaly. Their lineup is not as strong as it is on paper and their pitching is decent, but not good enough to dominate. This is a .500 team all the way. And unless you play in the NL, .500 doesn't put you close to a postseason.

As for this blog, I'm open to expanding our discussions to things non-Yankee related. I'd like to know what you all think about this lawyer with T.B., and I'd really like to delve into J.J. Abrams' new mystery film "Cloverfield."

Anyone game?

I'd be willing to turn this into an "anything goes" blog until the Yankees are 10 games above .500.

Are you with me?

I was looking forward to the discussion group regarding the relevancy of global warming to the 2008 German parliamentary elections. But whatever.

What else can be said about the Yankees? If they're not playoff bound then there's no need to talk about getting a player. And if they trade someone it's going to be for prospects so that's not worth discussing now.

Unless we're going to keep repeating ourselves, then I say open it up for non-Yankee discussion. If the team gets going then it's Yankees again.

The Scooter has spoken and so it shall be.

Well it's about time you frigs got the the "heart of the matter." Seems you've aired too much "dirty laundry" about your "boys of summer," seemingly every "new york minute."

This is the "end of the innocence" my friends...the end of an era.

Hazzah!
