All in or Fold?

What should the Yankees be thinking right now? Should we be looking to pick up one or two big players in exchange for some of the young talent, or should we call it quits and prepare for 2008?

We're 7 games out of the WC, 9 from Boston. Unfortunatley, we have very few games with either Cleveland or Boston.

Thoughts?

Tough call-- I say make a deal that will not only help a run for this season but more importantly make way for bringing in someone they can negotiate an extension with down the road-- if such a deal comes up.

If they can get someone helpful by just giving up money and minor prospects, then yes. However, every first (and even second) tier prospect should be off limits. It's not worth it for the slight chance to win this year.

After yesterday we're only 5 out from Cleveland and 6 from Boston (lost column). So it appears we're back in the hunt (again) on all fronts.

The thing is, when this team is on it doesn't need much. The Yanks have gotten a boost from guys like Phillips, Melky and Cairo, and I think it would be a mistake to squelch that momentum like we did last season. And Hughes will likely be better than any second rate arm we can trade for.

If I were Cashman, I would look to do two things and two things only. 1. Get a proven *American League* setup man who is having a good season. 2. Trade Johnny Damon and a prospect for a big bat out of the DH spot and give Melky center field.

Thoughts?

One more thing, what is the deal with Edwar Ramirez and Chris Britton? These guys are having bang up years in Scranton, and Britton was a bona fide major leaguer last year. Why haven't Cashman/Torre given these guys more time?

Wow, Cleveland and Boston now have identical records. We have more games with Boston. It looks like the division might be our best chance after all...

Trading Damon will require someone to want a DH. He can't play on turf and he can hardly play the field. He would be ok in softball with the extra outfielder.

Trade Farnsworth, Melky, Damon, Miekenwicz for Tori Hunter. They should sign him though.

Eric Gagne 1.23 era 2w-0L 14s 25k 30g will be expensive and a free agent.I don't know who else is there - Al Reyes. But they do have to get someone(s) who can pitch in the AL.

That's true, if Damon can't play the outfield, he's garbage.

So, he's garbage.

So I guess we're saying that we need some middle relief and a possible center fielder?

I don't particularly like the idea of Gagne, he reminds me of Rich Harden. Expensive and injury prone, but good. Who else is even available?

Torii Hunter is going to cost us big time. And he should, he's the best center fielder in baseball right now. I don't know why Minnesota would trade him though, they should be building their team around him.

Anyways, we're 7.5 games down in both races right now (7-21-07).

Hunter and Gagne are both free agents. Hunter wants off the turf and the Twins stadium is a few years away. Also, Yankees have the money in case you don't know.

Rangers are going no where. Gagne will be expensive to sign. I doubt they would re-sign him if acquired.

There's also been talk of Texiera to the Yankees. So if the Yankee weaknesses are addressed CF, Relief, 1B. Then some people have to go.

Anybody hear anything about Giambi? I think he's done for the year. Mienkiewicz is weak he's no 1B replacement.

Melky in CF is fine for defense but is weak offensively. Same as 1B there's no complete player available.

DH who is that going to be Damon? If he can't run he shouldn't be batting leadoff. He's playing the field because he can't run. His arm is suited for the bench.

Relief - Proctor, Visciano, Villone, Bruney, Farnsworth - Myers and Rivera being specialists. Can you trust those 5 and whoever else from the 6th to 9th from September on? But again you add people you get rid of people.

Wang, Clemens, Pettitte will be fine. Mussina looks bad he's not going anywhere but the more he pitches the further back in the rotation he should go by August he should be a 9th starter.

If Hughes can get a spot back and in form then maybe they don't need another starter.

Igawa is a bust. His speeds are in the 80s and he's not fooling hitters. Maybe he needs to find his inner Godzilla. If not hit the road

The Yankees would be mad-dog bananas to overpay for Tori Hunter. The guy is on pace to hit 32-120-.298, which he won't do because he's a first half player anyway. If those numbers hold up, this will have been his best season, and we'd be foolish to fall for it. I think Tori is greatly overrated.

Melky, for his part, is having a pretty decent year at the plate for a 22 year old. Considering the promise of last season and this season, I'm willing to give Melky the keys to center field. After all, Bernie Williams did not start to hit for power until he was 27 and 28 years old. His early stats are remarkably similar to Melky's first two seasons, and Melky has a much bigger upside in center field.

Check out Bernie's stats when he was in his early and mid-twenties:

stats

I was crunching some numbers today and frankly, our chances of making it suck. If we play .600 baseball our opponents have to play .500. If we play .650+ baseball (45-22), our opponents still have to play only .570 to win. 7 or 8 games is a bunch with only 67 left.

We play the worst teams in the league over the next 14 games. Here's hoping for a 11-3 run.
