Cory Lidle's plane crashes into NYC highrise

This is coming out in the midst of breaking news, and it may not be accurate information, but the reports are that a single-engine plane registered to Cory Lidle crashed into an Upper East-Side apartment building this afternoon.

On a lark, I googled "Cory Lidle pilot" and came up with this story from February. Lidle just got his pilot's license this year.

And now, it's just been confirmed by CNN. Cory Lidle was killed today in a plane crash. Sad news.

Two dead, Corey Lidle and his flight instructor. He alerted a tower in New Jersey of fuel problems just minutes after take off. This is accurate as of 5:30pm.

All my prayers go to Corey, his instructor, and their families. Corey had a six year old child, and a wife.

Corey, although you weren't an intricate part of the Yankees, I'll remember your words of praise for Joe Torre when asked about it on the FAN. You will be missed.

He pitched a great game in getting the win in Boston during the sweep. He'll always be a part of that great series, which probably won't be forgotten for a long time.

This is so sad. The more I think about it, the more I see footage of Corey, the more I get emotional. He seemed like a genuinely good person, and he came to Joe's defense in his final hours. I don't mean that in a political way, of course, but just to say that this guy was a class act. This is a tragedy for all of baseball. My prayers go out to him as well.

Dodort, you're absolutely right. That was a gem of a game.

Apparently Lidle was moving north along the East River when he reached a restricted area and had to turn his plane 180-degrees south. It was during this maneuver that the accident took place.

I understand there are heliports along the East River, but by the point you come up to Roosevelt Island, no aircraft are allowed to proceed further north. My question is, why then allow any aircraft up the East River corridor? Certainly this sort of accident was not foreseen, but I am concerned that the flight rules over Manhattan are so permissive for aircraft to track so closely to buildings.

Of course we may never know what went wrong with Lidle's flight, but certainly disallowing planes to fly in these areas is a way to prevent these types of accidents from happening. And of course, even worse, it's a security risk.

A very interesting blog post with respect to Enrique Wilson almost dying in the 2001 plane crash over Queens, NY following the 2001 WS, especially read comment #12 re: Mariano Rivera. http://bronxbanter.baseballtoaster.com/archives/541847.html

Joe and Jeter on Lidle:

"This is a terrible shock. I was with [coaches] Ron Guidry and Lee Mazzilli when I heard the news and we were just stunned. Cory's time with the Yankees was short, but he was a good teammate and a great competitor. My heart goes out to his family," Torre said.

"I am shocked by this devastating news. Spending the last few months as Cory's teammate, I came to know him as a great man. While he was known as a baseball player, he was, more importantly, a husband and father and, at a time like this, I want to share my deepest sympathies with his wife Melanie, his son Christopher and all those who know and loved him," Jeter said.

I find it interesting that Joe was with Guidry and Mazilli. Do these guys hang out?

I want to know everything there is about Joe Torre. Does he like tuna? Can he still copulate? Does he believe in Jesus? These are questions I would like answered before he leaves us.

Joe loves Jesus and Jesus loves him. That's why the infidel was swayed.
