Giambi was playing with a real wrist injury and that obviously affected his swing. Matsui and Jeter hit and got on base, they just didn't always hit when the situation required it. Sheff didn't play well at all. But A-Rod does more than fail to hit. He became a focal point for the team's failure. He was a distraction and he screwed up the other players.
I think Sheff's comments are interesting, and we might finally have come into a legitimate criticism of Torre: He did not know how to handle A-Rod. It's clear that A-Rod was a clubhouse cancer. Not the aggressive kind of cancer Raul Mondesi or even Sheff has been accused of being in the past, but the kind that moves imperceptibly, quietly infecting everything. The A-Rod situation was a distraction. But my feeling is that the problem for A-Rod is New York. It won't matter who manages him.
On the other hand, Sheff has an axe to grind. He was angry he was benched in Game 3 and he's angry that the Yankees would not pick up his option last offseason and now certainly won't do it. So he's about the most biased voice on the team right now. Otherwise, everyone is going to bat for Torre.
But I think it's true that Joe was at a loss with A-Rod this season.
6-2! THe NY Post has a poll asking the same question and the results are 65%-35% in favor of KEEPING Joe Torre as the skipper. I guess our small sample is in line with online readers of The Post. Interesting...

Yeah, I just read that Sheff comment on ESPN.com.
That still doesn't excuse the fact that A-Rod failed to produce any offense during the series.
Notice how the preamble to the quote does not match what Sheff actually said. I hate the media.
