Randy's Balky Back

According to the Journal News, Randy has some serious issues:

"Randy Johnson was found to have a herniated disc in his back, but the Yankees remain optimisitic that he'll start Game 3 of the ALDS.
He had an epidural today and will play catch tomorrow. A bullpen session on Sunday will determine his status for Game 3. If he can't go, the Yankees will have both Jaret Wright and Cory Lidle in the rotation for the first round."

I am not sure what to think of this. I heard one report on the radio that they will know by tomorrow whether the epidural took or not. Apparently the difference between an epidural and cortisone is that cortisone actually involves a little guesswork as to where the pain is. With the epidural they also use a steroid but they go in with a scope and actually hit the exact nerve that is bothering Randy.

Besides that -- is anybody worried about Damon's performance at the plate lately. This may have gotten lost, but since he is on my fantasy team and I am trying to win a championship, he has been HORRIBLE over the past three weeks and just looks completely out of sorts.

Thoughts??

This is crazy talk, Rizzuto!

We are far better off with Randy than without. What, you'd rather see Corey Lidle pitch?

I thyink we have to be rpepared for the reality that Unit will not be available. That means we *must* win Game 1 with Wang up on the hill against (presumably Minnesota and Johan). This best-of-five scenario is going to be tough.

As for Johnny D, I say he's a double-agent for the Red Sox and he must be shot on sight.

I'm with Adam on this one. Randy, overall, has won a bunch of games for the Yankees and the alternatives are non-existent. Once we accept that Randy has a very good excuse for not pitching like a 27 year old--he's ancient--then what he's done for us looks a lot better. I don't think you can compare Randy's breakdowns with those of say A-Rod, who is in his prime.

That said, let's hope he's able to pitch. We need him.

Dan, no one is saying that Johnson has been great. But he's been good. You can't honestly prefer Corey Lidle, and I don't think that's what you're saying (though it kind of seems like it). My point is only that for a 43 year old guy, we've gotten a lot out of Randy. Here are his numbers this season:

Starts giving up 2 or less runs: 11
Starts giving up 3 or 4 runs: 9
Starts giving up 5 or more runs: 13

So you're right. He's been incredibly inconsistent and you don't know which Randy would show up on Thursday. But I'd still take my chances with him over anyone else they've got available.
