Let the Speculation Begin

Can we start now? Gentlemen, it's time for my 2nd favorite part of player movement. Behind only leading up to the trading deadline, let's hear some thoughts. Who should stay? Who should go? It should be fun.

Only 114 more days until pitchers and catchers report.
(I'm guessing that day is Feb. 19th.)

To address all three issues raised:

I don't know if I see Donny as managerial material. I don't know if that "aww, shucks" stuff will go far with the New York media. And he doesn't strike me as very intelligent. Of course, this is based on one unimpressive interview with Michael Kay on YES.

As for Pettitte, I would like to see him come back. I think he has three good seasons left in him, and he knows how to pitch in the postseason. His mediocre first half last season might make him a little cheaper than would have otherwise been the case.

Finally, I say we go for the Nipponese guy. He has a bigger upside than the inconsistent and overrated Zito and the inconsistent and injury prone Schmidt. And the other stuff you mentioned as far as signing him is worth considering.

Get Zito. Get Lilly. The Japanese guy may be excellent, but at least with these two pitchers, they have experience and they understand the AL terrain very well (and yes, Zito is overrated, but so what, he's still good). TRe: the japanese guy, his gyro pitch they're talking about sounds like a fancy slider, but the Japanese press claims it is unhittable. Sixty-some-odd years ago, the Japanese press claimed a lot of silly things as well. And besides, Hideki Matsui scoffs at this gyro, saying it's a myth. Sure, pay $20 million just to talk to the guy, but aren't we supposed to be concerned about getting pitching that will get us *past* the first round in the playoffs? The Japanese guy sounds like a gimmick.

The AL East is still ours to lose. Boston may make some improvements with FAs but I don't think they are willing (or able) to spend the money needed to secure their dominance in the division. Let's not get too cute. We need pitching. We need experience. If Andy Pettitte wants to come back to NY, I would be interested, but I doubt he'll come back unless we throw obscenely large amounts of money at him. And with his arm injuries of late, do we want another DL-listing waiting to happen? Get Zito and Lilly, buy out Jaret Wright's contract (at $4 million) and we'll have the lefties needed to get us over the hump. Oh and re-sign Muss.

Wang, Muss, Unit, Zito, Lilly. And ease in Philip Hughes. I can live with that.

Get Lily. I don't want Zito. I really don't. I don't think he'll cut it.

Andy, come home!

New rumor: The Phils are interested in Sheff. Send us Cole Hamels and some prospects!

Philly will not move Hamels.

Gents, Philly gave us Abreu and Lidle for leftover meatloaf. Of course, that was a money-saving deal for them, but it also tells me that Cashman has a Pat Gilick voodoo doll that does his bidding. But you're right, it would be a terrible deal for Philly. But I'm a Yankees fan, so I like to make believe we always win in these situations!
