WHAT IS SANTANA WORTH?

The talks are on.

But what is Johann Santana worth to the Yankees? What would you be willing to give up?

Let's assume that us signing him to an extension will be part of any trade.

Your thoughts....?

Very interesting. And dangerous! But intereting. Like dating a Vietnamese woman.

Yankees get Santana, Morneau, Mauer for Damon, Giambi, Mussina. Twins pick up all the salaries.

That looks even.

Dan, you're an intelligent young man. If only you'd put your powers to good instead of evil.

I figure Chamberlain is untouchable. But I wonder...if the Twins would take Joba and a minor league package for Santana, it might be worth it.

What would you prefer?

Joba and a bunch of minor leaguers

or

Hughes, Kennedy and Melky.

Joba has tremendous upside, but he has never been a SP. In fact, he's only pitched 24 innings last year. That's a really small sample size. And the kid made a big splash, but his value is at an all-time high for trading. Is he a durable SP? Who knows! 24 IP? I'd be willing to give the Twins Joba and Melky (and a no-name prospect) for Santana.

Well, Joba did start in the minors, and his numbers were impressive. Look at his strikeout totals. Wow. I don't want to let him go. He's fiery, young, and has a tremendous upside.

I don't want Santana for the simple reason of the new Yankee way. It looked as if the front office thinking was moving to newer, younger talent, as opposed to older, more mature veteran talent.

Now yes, Santana isn't old. And is incredibly good. But I think I'd still rather have Chamberlain.

As for Hughes and Kennedy. I'd like to see them stay also, but I wouldn't be opposed to a very nice deal.

From what I've read Joba is untouchable. Tabaka was named and a few others. Then Santana would have to sign a contract extension 1st.

Mets have nothing to offer.

Red Sox won't part with Ellsby their young CF. The Twins want him. The Red Sox have more to offer. That would be a dangerous club if they get him, Beckett, Matsioka.

The Twins want something in return not like the Tori Hunter signing. Though the Angels overpaid for him.

Santana turned down a 4 year $80 million from the Twins.

Yankees have the best offer so far. Twins may have to make a deal now, at the trade deadline, or lose him. Santana's got a no-trade clause.

He would be a pretty sweet addition.

I may be with Adam on this one. If we could deal Joba with a package of minor leaguers (and not Melky), I might pull the trigger. He did have a miraculous year last year, in both the minors and the bigs, but remember that he wasn't even a first tier going into last year. The verdict is still out for me, though I'm almost certain they won't trade him. But if they would take him and some second rate stuff, it might be our best bet.

I do not think getting Santana is going against the "new Yankee way." We are not signing Kevin Brown here. Santana will go into the Hall a Fame a Yankee if they get this guy now. He is the best pitcher in the game. David Cone, Jimmy Key, David Wells, El Duque--none of these guys were farm hands. Santana and Wang are the keys to the next Yankees dynasty. The young guys can fill out the rotation, maybe.

Can the Twins take Giambi with his salary paid for in full by the Yankees too? Please?

Randy Johnson past his prime, Kevin Brown waaaay past his hype, Jaret Wright (paid way too much) and the biggest stiff of them all, Carl "ATM Machine" Pavano with one good year (the contract year) in his whole career. That is the old Yankee way.

Santana is in his prime. Santana is a Cy Young candidate every year. Santana is a legit ace, something the Yanks have not had in a long time, even going back to the late 1990s. I would say that Jimmy Key in 1993 and 94 was amazing, though.

Ian, among all of the scouts, is rated higher than hughes and joba. with all the pressure surrounding joba it might actually make him fold. yeah, we need santana, but thanks to the twins picking up a center fielder that pretty much means he's going to wait for free agency, no more losing melky. All in all the smartest move - that means he isn't depleting the starters of the team that he is going to by avoiding a trade. and why would you trade IPK, Phil, or joba - all in their 20s and you can get way more out of them than just 6 years - johan might not make it to be such a commanding pitcher at 35.... -yankeechic26

oh, and for the people a little farther down there - if you want to see some good numbers look up IPK in the minors. it's retarded. -yankeechic26

I'm happy the Twins got Young, because that gives them less incentive to demand Melky.

I believe that about Kennedy.

Trade Joba now. There will never be a better time.

Don't look now, but the Red Sox are in the Santana sweepstakes. If they land him, they are a dynasty.

It's looking like this is going to happen, with Hughes and Melky going.

I'm having some second thoughts. It was just this time last season they were talking about Hughes being the Second Coming. He didn't look like it this season, of course, but might also not have been 100% after his groin injury. Are we trading a Santana in the making?

And I truly hate to lose Melky. He's an average hitter, but we haven't had a center fielder like than since...as long as I can remember.

I don't know. I just don't know.

The more I thought about the more I would rather see Joba go. You've got Rivera closing for a few years. There are nearly enough starters. So he will be ok.

Melky going leaves CF open. We've seen Damon is weak there.

Would that lead to a move for Andruw Jones?

How many "Santana in the makings" are there out there? Hughes is a product of a fantastic hype machine. He's got great stuff, but can he perform at the major league level? He's a mixed bag. Santana is Cy Young material.

And Melky is as average a player as I have seen. He's got a good arm and a decent bat. He's an outfielder, Steiner. Those guys grow on trees. Andruw Jones wants his Yankee money. And he's a better fit than Melky-- a righty power stick.

Give Andruw Jones a 5 year $70 million deal.

Trade Melky, Joba, and a AA or A player for Santana. 1st sign Santana to a 7 year $126 million deal.

Then you keep Damon out of CF, Santana's your #1 starter, the young starters get pushed back a spot.

The one questions would be your everyday 1B - Miekiewicz is a free agent. And the bullpen. Who sets up Rivera?

Percival blew off the Yankees for the Devil Rays.

My spelling mistake aside from the above comment, I like that deal.

Mussina will be gone next year so Jones' deal will replace him salary wise. That gives them 1 year of an extra few million.

I've never liked Andruw Jones. Despite putting up amazing numbers in 2005 and 2006, I've always considered him one of the most overrated players in the game. And his 2007 was terrible. He's probably better than Melky (though he wasn't last season), but he again makes the Yankees a 3-run homer or bust team. And for what we'll have to pay him I say no thank you. I'd *much* prefer Aaron Rowand. I think he'd be a great acquisition, and perhaps he would be in their plans if they trade Melky.

But, despite my dislike of Andruw, you're right. Passing on Santana would be a blunder. We should trade them Hughes and Melky.
