we look TERRIBLE
It's early. We all recognize that, and I would guess that the Yankees have not had a good April since 2000. We've been plagued by injuries, and it won't be fair to judge this team until we've got Pettite, Mussina, and Wang going for a few weeks.
But unlike past years, I'm just not sure there is enough in that rotation to even win the wildcard. If we assume the likes of Karstens and Rassner are stopgaps that are not going to perform on the big league level, then we're talking about Hughes, Igawa, Pavano or a trade.
We need to get 20 wins out of the back end of the rotation. Can we get 10 from Igawa? 10 from Pavano? I highly doubt it. If we're playing to win this season, it maybe be time for Hughes. It may also be time to think about trading a Cabrera and Proctor, reactivating Bernie, and bringing in a 190 innings fourth starter.
I mentioned back in January (I checked the blog) that I felt like we were building for 2009 this offseason. It's looking that way.
Am I panicking?

I'd be more confident if I weren't highly concerned that mussina may be done and that pavano is too "fragile" to pitch. In fact, pavano could be out for months with new injuries that emereg.
They have no pitching.
You don't go to the World Series, let alone the playoffs without good pitching. Steiner, you're not being pessimistic, your eyes are wide open.
Pavano's few games he pitched should be counted as his season and be done with him. Igawa is a bust. Obviously, it was a bad move and only countered because of Matsusaka. Mussina maybe ok and if can give them some innings that's fine.
Bernie is not the answer. Matusaka would have been nice. Karstens and Rasner may work out of the bullpen but they're not starter material.
Even if Hughes pitches wonderfully, they're still a starter short. I doubt they would rely on 2 rookies so that means a trade.
Rodriguez, Abreu, Rivera, are free agents or could be. They have to be signed.
Anyone see that Red Sox reliever? Olijima? He's the one that got the save last Friday. He would have been nice to get.
This team is terrible. They should be concerned.
The team certainly isn't *terrible*, although we've looked that way.
To compete, two things need to happen. First, we'll need to get 20 wins out of a combination of these five pitchers: Igawa, Pavano, Hughes, Karstens, Clemens.
Second, Wang, Mussina, and Pettite will have to combine for 45+ wins.
We're already 1/10th of the way through the season and the first group has 2 wins and the second group has 2 wins. That's the size of it.
Btw, I don't think it's too early to start a Torre death watch.
What about some bullpen help? Those guys are going to need a month off to rest the arms.
Rivera 3 weeks in and 0 Saves!
Sad, Sad, Sad
Look, let's not get negative like we do at the beginning of every season. There are some good things that are happening here.
The offense is performing very well, and AROD looks like a triple crown winner right now. The defense has improved over the past eight games or so. We've got some talent in the minor leagues that could help us at the big league level.
The point is, be positive. The season is still very young, we've got some time to work out the kinks. And if we're still struggling come mid season, hopefully there will be a big name starter to pick up.
Joe Torre is safe.
JMAR, I've got your positive right here.
Wang pitched last night so that was good. However, Jeter left the gam That looks even.
Bullpen is overworked but Philip Hughes is on the way.
That looks even.
Mussina should be ready soon, Pavano may never pitch again.
That looks like an advantage.
Clemens maybe on the way provided he gets his shipment of roids.
So to be positive, things should be ok. As long as they can weather the storm for a few weeks and get everyone healthy watch out world.
That's what I'm talking about when I talk about America!
Hey, we've got a bill of sale right here.
Things are looking up.
