Hughes to Start Thursday

I really don't think that this is a good idea. I know they have pitchers hurt, but it seems like a panic move, especially with Wang coming back. Why bring him up so early? Either they are going to have to send him back down again, which may mess with his head, or they have to keep him up all season. He may be good enough to stay up, but if he's up his innings can't be managed like they are in the minors and you end up risking the best prospect on the team.

I concur. We are supposedly getting Wang and Mussina, and Matsui back this week. We just got swept by Boston, but are still only four games down in April. There is no rush, *unless* the Yankees are thinking that Igawa is heading to AAA very soon, though Hughes was announced before yesterday's putrid start.

This is good. Let's see what the kid got. They have to do something. Th Band-aids they're using now are not working.

Even with Wang, Mussina, and Pavano if he comes back, they shouldn't be counted on to go deep right now coming back from injuries. Wang could easily be overworked even if pitching well.

So that comes down to the bullpen. It seems everyone is overworked but Rivera who's underworked. (Approx 24 innings since Sept including Spring Training.)

Sure it's only April, sure the team is built for the long haul, sure you expect things to turn around, but if the bullpen is overworked come October then having starters going 5 innings relievers go 4 innings every game will all point back to April and say what the frig happened?

At least Hughes knows Alex Rodriguez will show up, the rest of the team is day-to-day.

Dudes, I just found my way to the blogs. It is Gillette from Orlando! I am so pissed with our pitching that I am texting Clemens 2night to get his ass to NY on the next Red Eye. Off to Catch the game tonight in Tampa. Look for me on YES. Rich out

The problem is that Hughes will tax the bullpen even more. You don't want him to throw more than 6 innings a game. If he does, he's going to have a vastly higher inning count this year than last year, which is a major no-no if you don't want your young pitcher's arms to explode.

Well, if Hughes could consistently get into the sixth, he'd be doing as well as any pitcher in the rotation, so I don't think it would hurt the pen anymore than they are already suffering.

But I would still rather have seen Karstens get another shot in the rotation than to go to Hughes so early. Assuming that Wang and Mussina are on track, and that the team plans to keep Igawa in the bigs, we're only down one starter, and I don't think we needed to go to Hughes yet.

Guys, I don't think this Hughes move is long term. Igawa will start a few more games, he's being paid too much not to. Mussina and Wang will be there. Pettitte is healthy. The only variable is Pavano. And if he is out longer than expected we have Rassner and Karstens.

I think Torre wants Hughes to get some work in at the big league level. And why not? It's early in the season. We should be looking at every option here, while we have the time to do so.

If it was later in the year, and the season was on the line, I'd be skeptical. But let's put some confidence in this guy, he's done well in Scranton this year. He could be another Jered Weaver.

He hasn't done that well in Scranton, and if he gets bombed in the bigs, like he did in spring training, the press will be all over his 20 year old psyche like a chicken on pork grizzle.

But we'll see how it goes. Good luck to Yough Hughes.

Hughes actually does have decent numbers there:

Record: 2-1
ERA: 3.94
Whip: .94
IP: 16.0
K: 17
HR: 0

So he doesn't give up alot of hits, nor does he walk alot of guys. And zero homeruns.

I can agree that he's done decent, but his first two starts actually sucked, in his last start he went six or seven scoreless and struck out 10.

Right, so maybe he's just getting into the groove. I think its going to play out well for the Yankees.

God willing, because he's now a member of August 16, 1977.

Who was that rlgpsu? Not to long ago there was a Red Sox fan on here. What gives?

I'm not hearing too much about Pavano. Given his past few seasons nobody can expect anything from him.

Matsui is back. Wang is back from the DL and we'll see how well he does.

Just have to get to the end of the month and we'll see how Pavano and Mussina are doing. Phil Hughes coming is to get his feet wet. Ron Guidry is the next option.

It reeks of desperation. Joe is right that hughes has done better his past couple of starts, but I'd give hime another few weeks in scranton before bringing him up. You can never underestimate the mental toll of playing in new york.
