Dice K and the Lousy Yankees

What's this blog worth if not to completely exaggerate our misfortunes and the oppositions' victories?

Yesterday, Dice K looked like an ace, better than every Yankees starting pitcher. Pettitte, on the other hand, looked like hammered shit.

We're finished.

The season is 3 games old and you've got the white flag up?

I can see why. Asking the bullpen to go 5 innings every night is ridiculous. Even though they gave up only 1 hit and a walk. That this pace, the bullpen will be worn out by June.

Igawa better shine. Matsu-awesome is the real deal. Are you?

And the Yankee News gets worse. Not only did the local Yankees (Triple A team) lose the franchise opener (in Scranton) but now this:

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees officials have not yet made a decision on whether they’ll keep the Grump, despite the recent arrest of a county employee who worked part-time as the burly, green mascot.

Jay Hastings, who was “backup to the backup” mascot, was arrested Friday on charges that he sexually assaulted a 14-year-old Scranton boy. He was also arrested by White Haven police on Tuesday for allegedly arranging to meet a 14-year-old boy for sex through an Internet chat room.

For the rest of its current homestand, the Yankees will use Scooter, the mascot for the ballclub’s Single-A affiliate in Staten Island, N.Y.

“We don’t really have a direction with the Grump,” team vice president Jeremy Ruby said Friday evening during the Yankees’ game against the Norfolk Tides. “We’re trying to get creative and trying to do the best we can in (light) of the situation.”

Mr. Hastings was hired by the former Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons organization in 1991 as a part-time parking lot attendant. Two years ago, the team started using him as a backup mascot to the two employees who regularly suit up as the Grump.

In that role, Mr. Hastings would make appearances at parades, birthday parties and other outside events during the baseball offseason.

Calling him “a quiet, regular guy,” club officials said they were shocked to hear of his arrest.

“We’re an organization that prides itself on family values,” Mr. Ruby said. “The allegations surrounding Mr. Hastings basically fly in the face of everything we stand for. We’re outraged. There’s no doubt about it.”

So does Pavano and Mussina and Igawa.

Yankees starters have allowed 22 runs - 19 earned - and 28 hits in 17 1-3 innings for a 9.87 ERA. Igawa started hearing boos after his 12th batter. He failed to string together a 1-2-3 inning and gave up seven runs, eight hits, three walks, a hit batter and two home runs, a performance that left him with a 12.60 ERA.

His fastball, clocked from 89-91 mph, was the only pitch he consistently threw for a strike.

Hideki Matsui strained his left hamstring running out a second-inning grounder and left in the fourth. Torre said he probably wouldn't play until Friday in Oakland. Johnny Damon still recovering from a strained right calf, pinch hit in the eighth and struck out, then went to center.

At least Philip Hughes helped lead the local Yankees to their 1st victory.

Alex Rodriguez for President!
