Ain't No One Gonna Save This Blog?

Opening day is two weeks away. Any thoughts? Pavano is on schedule, I'll give him that.

Sorry for the lack of posting. I got a new computer and I'm trying to get things in order. I'm back now so lets do it.

Pavano seems to be doing ok. If he can be counted on as a reliable #4 I can live with that. I just don't expect anything else.

Igawa seems to be a bust right now. Sure it's only Spring Training but show me something. Right now it looks like it was Dike Matsusomething they should have gotten.

There seems to be a situation with Melky. Where to play him and how often? From watching Mike & the Mad Dog, he might be platooning the outfield a few times a week. This will give the older guys some fielding days off and he'll get some playing time.

The other news is that Giambi is getting more time a first. Can he even bend down for a grounder? So late innings it will be Doug M. But he can't hit. I would rather have Andy Phillips play 1B than Doug M. I don't know enough about Josh Phelps but maybe he'll do better. I just don't like Doug. Giambi can't play more than 1/4 the season at first though he's got to DH.

Anyone see/hear Alex Rodriguez on Mike & the Mad Dog the other day? I feel he's gone after the season or at least opting out. It seems he's on the I'm leaving side compared with the I'm staying. This is going to be talked about all year.

Ron Villone seems to have gotten a spot in the bullpen. I don't mind that. He can eat up some innings and spot start if necessary.

Hughes, Karstens, Offendorf? all seem to be on their way to the majors maybe this year but if not then next year.

I hope that people are at least reading the posts if they're not posting. Maybe it's the lack of news or time or whatever. I'm back and I'll be posting. It won't be everyday but I'll do what I can.

Dan, good summary of all the big issues in Yankeeland and way to get us going again.

All signs are positive for Pavano at this point. If he remains healthy, he seems guaranteed the #4 rotation spot.

From what I've read, Igawa has been completely hitable this spring and no one is very impressed with his stuff. I think it's at least 50/50 that he starts the season in Scranton, which is fine by me, considering that Karstens is supposed to be throwing as well as he ever has with increased velocity. The problem with Igawa, of course, is that he's a $50 million investment.

Another issue is Mussina, who is not having a good spring and who has lost more velocity (at least at this point). This could be that inevitable season of steep decline for him.

If they are planning on playing Giambi more at first than originally thought, that's pretty irritating. If it was known that the DH spot was to be open even 1/3 of the time, there would have been much more incentive for Bernie to come to camp.

The A-Rod thing was typical. He's a flake. I

Is there anything that can be done for Mussina? You can't teach velocity, right? He had a good run. We all should hope he can keep the games he pitches competitive. With the Yankee offense, I expect 10-15 wins from him, not the 15-19 (he never won 20 games?)

If Igawa is so hittable, the best thing would be to come up to Scranton. How is his velocity? I think his signing was a mistake, I'm telling you now. A mistake.

There still is time but a lot of questions remain. 5th outfielder? 4th-5th starters? Bullpen? Backup catcher?

I was just reading the NY Post, and Igawa has fanned 12 in 7 innings of work, which is interesting considering his fastball averages 87-88 mph. The article said that as it now stands Karstens is heading for AAA.

Mussina has been losing velocity for years, and he's responded by becoming craftier. I wouldn't count him out yet, though age has to catch up to these guys at some point.

Well it sounds as though Igawa is getting by for now. I wonder how high he can crank it up when he needs too.

Anyone (maybe I'm only talking to you now Steiner) watch any Yankee Spring Training games? There is a big big loss with Jim Kaat not there. Leiter is ok. Girardi is tolerable. Singleton is good. Murcer is missed. O'Neill is awesome - he'll be a Hall Of Fame Broadcaster as well as Hall Of Fame Player.

Who do you like for backup catcher? 1B? 5th Outfielder?

I really don't know about those positions and obviously they aren't that important. I would have liked to see Bernie as the fifth outfielder. Now I assume they will go with some slick fielding speedster, which makes sense. As for firstbase, they seem to think that Phillips has the advantage over Phelps for the right handed platoon, but I'm pretty indifferent, though Phelps put up great numbers in AAA last season.

Keeping Giambi from playing the field is not important? Do you even know who he is? They need good numbers from the spot Giambi's not taking. Doug M. maybe good with the glove but his offense is no where to be found. That will be an issue come the postseason. Sure that's a ways off but when you expect the World Series every year and you're built for it why not talk about?

First base is settled, it's Doug M. I don't know who he will split time with, but it's either Phillips or Phelps. Phelps batted .400 so far this spring, Phillips .222. But word is they are leaning towards Phillips.

That's about the size of it.

Either of their offense should be better than Doug M's. If their defense is good then dump Doug. He's dead weight.
