Hank Bauer

I always remember the name of Hank Bauer from Old Timers Days from past years and from the stories of the great Yankees teams of the 1950's, usually associated with Moose Skowron. But I really didn't know all that much about him otherwise. Now that he has passed, and I read his obituary, I was amazed. 7 World Series Rings with the Yanks and 1 as Orioles manager, 2 Bronze Stars and 2 Purple Hearts in WWII. I don't mean to get all "Greatest Generation" here but I just have to say what an incredible life this man led.

Cool post, Critch, and food for thought. It's amazing how many of the biggest stars went off to war in WWII and Korea. Bob Feller and Ted Williams both come to mind.

Yeah, it really is amazing. Look at Feller's stats! He probably would have 85 more wins!

What about Joe Dimaggio? How could you not name Dimaggio? You have brought shame to your comment.

Hank Bauer holds the World Series record for the longest hitting streak, at 17 games. From 1956-58 set a World Series hitting streak record of 17 games, which was later matched as a postseason record by Derek Jeter.
