Bad Losses

Gentlemen,

Last night we had yet another bad loss. I know it's still only April, but so far I can count three games that we should have come away with winning only to have them snatched from us at the last moment.

1) Our opening series against Oakland, where we lost the game off Scott Proctor's arm. This is not an egregious loss, but is stung nonetheless. This game reflected the weakness of our bullpen.

2) Our loss to the Twins, off of Mariano's arm, but mostly a result of bad defense. This is the game where Joe Torre showed fire and genuine anger to the press afterwards.

3) Last night's ridiculous game against the Devil Rays. This game was truly lost by terrible baserunning and awful at-bats by Alex Rodriguez. Don't jump to conclusions about Mo yet, I chalk up the blame to our offense here.

So there you have it, three examples of bad baseball played by our Yankees. We've got a long way to go until October, and a lot of room to succeed or fail along the way.

Cause for optimism? You make it sound like we have a beatable cancer. The Yankees will be perfectly fine. We all know that, and that's pretty much why there isn't much to talk about at this point.

I wonder if it's time to stop thinking of Mo as a 6 out pitcher. Even as far back as a couple of years ago, he was struggling in his 2nd inning. I know he can still do it every once and awhile, but he's not consistantly good in the 2nd anymore.

I think so, not so much because he can't do it, but because he's 36 years old. I think babying him--at least until August and September--isn't a bad idea.

Gentlemen, I have to say I may have been wrong about Bowa as the 3rd base coach!

There was terrible baserunning last night; Cano brekaing for homeplate from 3rd on that groundball was a disaster. And even worse, Crosby looking like August Stuart caught in a porno video shop between 2nd and 3rd base. And A-Rod was unquestionably bad. I don't rag on Matsui's slump because he's not our clean-up guy. A-Rod *must* do better, however...

"The reason they make so much money is because they are durable and the numbers are always there." I think the same can be said for the Yankees as a team. And at the end of the season, the record will be there.

I think you can completely shrug off those losses. The Red Sox will also blow games, if they haven't already. This isn't the type of sport where you can say "If only we won those games in May." It just doesn't work that way. Teams will rise and fall according to their situations throughout the season. If the Yakees have a ten game lead going into August, they are more likely to slump and come back to the pack. It's not easily quantifiable, but that's the way it goes. Teams as good as the Yankees and Sox will square off in August and September, when the finish line is in sight. The winner will be the team to get it done when the chips are down. Until then, the goal is to keep it close, which the Yankees surely will. Even with all the poor play, we're two games out of first.

Sometimes, especially after a tough loss, I picture Steiner wearing a pink dress. Then I feel a whole lot better. Shrug it off!
