The Hinge

The Yankees 2008 season depends on one man: Andy Pettitte. If the Yanks can lure him back, we will have as good a 1-2 as anyone in the league and it would take a lot of pressure of the Chamberlain--Hughes--Kennedy trio that I expect to round out the rotation. If he retires, I don't see how we can truly compete next year.

The one positive: Andy's agent has said it's down to NY or retirement. Is a 35 year old with an outside shot at the HOF really going to retire?

Check out these numbers: 201-113, .640 pct. If he could get to 225 and had that percentage, he'd have a shot.

Absolutely, Andy Pettitte was a key factor in the Yankees success last year ad moving forward. In the maelstrom of this A-Rod hoopla, Pettitte's contribution gets lost in the noise.

How badly does he want to make the HOF? That's an interesting question. I think even the most modest player would still have a burning desire to make it amongst the greats. I bet Roger throws that out there to Andy.

That's another interesting question...is Roger welcome back?

Now, this is also *extremely* interesting. Listen to Torre talk about expectations in LA. He's clearly thrilled that he won't be expected to win the World Series next year. It's not even very subtle. That's all he's talking about, how the expectations are that his team will "play hard."

Check it out.

Vote Andy on Proposition 420

Vote No to Clemens returning. Maybe this time he'll listen to his wife and retire. - Anyone see that commercial of him on the golf course and calls his wife to play 1 more season with the guys.

Andy, Mariano, Jorge need to return

I dunno, Anth. It looks like he's got high expectations for the team. I didn't get that feeling at all.

I really think the Yankees need Andy, not just for his pitching, but his veteran status. He needs to lead those kids. Tutor them. Wang being relatively young, and Joba, Hughes, and Kennedy being just baby buttercups.

Also, I wasn't aware that Bowa and Mattingly were following Torre to the Yankees. I think that's great.

I do, too. But we're going to be very hard pressed to replace the 1/16 of a victory that Bowa brought us.

Adam, Dan, what did you guys think? I felt like he emphasized "giving our all" more than "we're here to win a championship," and I thought there was some relief in his voice.

He looks terrible in that uniform, though. Pinstripes do have a thinning quality.
