Who will lead us?

Buster Olney sums it up for me. I'm a Girardi guy. I think he's got a lot of Joe in him but will also be a great field manager. I have no such confidence in Mattingly.

I also have a general distaste for Mattingly's role in this process, and I'm not saying it's reasonable. But I wonder who he is, thinking he could replace Joe Torre and manage this team with no experience. I don't like it.

When Girardi was the bench coach a couple of years ago, I heard stories first-hand from a very good friend of his about how hard he was working at the job.

Girardi would pour over stats and materials in preparing the team. Girardi was also told by Torre "You can't be their friend" even though the team still had some of his former teammates still playing. Girardi gets it- he's smart, he's mature and he *wants* to manage. Torre will be an impossible act to follow, but just like how Truman had to take over after FDR, I'm certain that if chosen, Giradi would be his own man and he'll do a competent, if not great, job.

The more I think about Mattingly managing, the more my blood boils. I'm incredibly hesitant to stick anyone in that role.

But I would go with Girardi also, just because of his experience.

But, think about this. Can Girardi manage egos like Torre did? Torre was fortunate that his teams were incredibly talented because he wasn't a great tactician. But, he knew how to talk to high priced ball players. Will Girardi be able to do this?

The Yankee club isn't like other clubs. Each of these guys has the attitude they should be making millions. Will Girardi take this into consideration? More importantly, how will these huge heads react to his no nonsense approach.

I think under Mattingly the clubhouse would go to hell.

None of these guys are going to be able to manage egos like Joe. That was his gift, the reason he will one day be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Bottom line: I think Mattingly would be in over his head.

Girardi, for his part, got fired because he didn't take crap from the owner in Floria, so he might not be the best fit for the Steinbrenner's, but he is my choice.

Today could be the day.

Welcome back, Yankees GM. No thoughts on TAJT?

I'm for joe, basically because he has results. Mattingly is a nice guy but he has to manage somewhere else first. I think his initial comments about TAJT show that he realizes he'll be over his head

Girardi is secretly being considered for the Dodger's job as well. The article says teams aren't allowed to make big announcements during the WS. What a load! What the hell are they Yankees waiting for? Tony Pena.

And....is anyone watching the series? What the hell happened to all that Rocky hitting!!??

The Rockies are a bunch of pansies.

Don Mattingly announced if he becomes the Yankees Manager, the logical choice to succeed him as Bench Coach is Kevin Maas.

He said, Kevin Maas replaced me at 1B when my back gave out. I couldn't think of a finer man to take my place on the bench.

Haha...

But now tell me what you really think!

What I really think is that Girardi has made lemonade out of lemons but everyone had low expectations of the taste. Mattingly can get the lemons and try to make lemonade but if it's not good right away then he might ever make it good. His legacy, with the talent and payroll , will only get him so many years.

What the f does that mean?

Girardi showed he can manage a young team that nobody expected to go anywhere. They didn't win anything but they played better than expected.

Mattingly maybe another Torre maybe another passer-by. I would not expect him to take the team to the World Series. However, with the amount the Yankees spend, the least they can do is be a playoff contender.

I feel that Girardi would be a better choice but I don't think he'll get it. Mattingly was brought in for what? Torre's job. To spend 2-3 more years as a coach would not make a difference.

The time is now. The position is open.

If Mattingly is joined by Bowa and Pena that will be okay by me. I would replace Guidry with Mazzone. Or make Mazzone bench coach. I don't have confidence in Guidry with the young talent.

I think you're probably dead on about the reason Mattingly was brought in. He was being groomed for just this moment, and he'll probably get it.
