If Not Torre Then Mattingly?

After reading the rumors, rants, and opinions it seems there are 3 people up for the managers job. Torre is gone as the everyone not in position to make a decision says.

Don Mattingly - He's been groomed for the job since he became a coach. He's got to know that he could win the World Series but can he take being booed?

Joe Girardi - He took a year off since being manager of the year NL. He would be a good choice but would Mattingly, the likely successor now or later, wait 5 years? For Girardi, it's now or never.

Tony LaRussa - I don't see this happening. He may leave St. Louis because of a new GM but I don't see him fitting in at all.

Torre - He's been through the fires for a few years now. He can't be blamed for everything but does share some responsibility in the teams results the past few years.

So does he stay or does he go? I think this off season will tell a lot about the direction the team will go into the new stadium. Who leads them? Who does the leader lead?

After his work this season, Joe Torre is the only one for the job in my opinion. I was a ardent opponent of Torre in years past, but he proved his worth with getting the '07 Yanks to the postseason. Most other managers would have fallen short of that mark.

If it's not Torre, I would prefer Mattingly and here's why: 1) Mattingly knows this organization better than anyone else alive-- he's spent his entire adult life associated with the Yankees. 2) He doesn't have a track record-- normally I'd say that's a weakness, but think about it. Unlike La Russa, who has WS rings, I think Mattingly will be given a lot more leeway from the fans and the higher ups. Anyone coming in after Torre faces a terribly difficult job. The second he's gone (if that happens next season) people will suddenly start missing him. Mattingly is a clean slate, and that is probably what's needed. An experienced manager brings his own baggage. No thanks. And 3) Mattingly is capable, I think. Like I said earlier, he's spent his whole life in the game. If he doesn't know how to manage by now, he'll never be able to do the job. If they have to let Torre go, I want Mattingly.

If Torre comes back, how many more years are they going to give him? The Yankees want World Series rings, otherwise it's a Bobby Cox-Braves situation. Sure there is success but they've hit a wall.

So if Mattingly doesn't get the job will he continue to be a Willie Randolph - #2 guy?

LaRussa? No way

Girardi - I think this is his only shot.

As I said earlier, I'm not going to comment until they decide what they want to do with Joe. I want him to stay, of course, for all the reasons we've talked about over the years.

Hopefully they'll decide by the end of next week. The troops are being deployed to Tampa for Tuesday, if I remember correctly.

Comment on that Steiner

If white smoke comes from Steinbrenner's favorite burger joint in Tampa, does that mean we get a new manager?

Can we get a Torre poll on the site?

It's been so long since we've done polls, I barely remember how. Joe, can you put on up? You've got about 12 hours... Joe's fate is nearly upon us.

I, for one, think they are going to fire him. I think the Sons are very weird. I don't think either of them are baseball men or even that interested in the game, and I think protecting their dad's pride will be first on their minds.

There was a weird article about them the other day. I think it was Hank that was saying he did most of the "baseball stuff" while Hal did some of the financial stuff, like the stadium. It was just so weird to hear the franchise described in that way. None of the absolute all consuming passion that their father has for it. I think we will miss George enormously, regardless of whether Joe goes or stays.

King George's reign is over. Long Live the King.

Anyone have Steve Swindal's whereabouts? Maybe he's living with Olga...
