Trade Randy?

That seems to be the question of the moment. What does it mean? Will we plunge into the Zito race if we do? Is Cashman still thinking Proctor or Karstens in the fifth spot? Does he have confidence in Pavano?

It's a strange trade possibility, considering how our starting pitching remains shallow and Arizona has little to offer on the big league level.

I think it's a no brainer, I have read that Zito would prefer the Bronx and may consider taking a little less, if we make room for him by trading RJ we go from a 6-7 inning guy who won't even start the season to a 7-8 inning guy who is young and durable. Forget Clemens, go for Zito, just don't over pay (too much)!

Zito is an improvement, yes, but at what cost? If he wants to be a Yankee really bad and will play for less, sure, why not sign him. But the more likely scenario is that the Mets and Yankees get into a bidding war that drives his cost way up. And even though he's the best pitcher on the market (now that we've signed Pettitte), I don't think he's a #1 and I wouldn't pay him #1 money.

Grant Caesar Peters, I don't know who you are but I agree with you.

I never like the Big Bust (and I don't mean Dolly Parton.)

Vasquez wasn't the ace the Yankees were hoping for but Johnson was in a decline. Sure, Johnson could have been the ace but for how long? The late '90s dynasty was built for the long haul.

Trade Johnson for Brandon Webb (yeah, right.)

After looking over the Diamondbacks roster I don't know anyone they would be willing to trade. I know the 'names' but they're not what the Yankees could use.

Johnson for Linebrink is another possibility.

I read an article today, maybe in the Post, that said that the Yankees were looking to shop Yankee independent of any other move, that they were looking to cut payroll and get younger and continue to rebuild the far system. That sounds fine, but assuming we trade him and don't land Zito, is anyone comfortable with that back end? Igawa, Karstens, Pavano, and Proctor for two rotation spots? And let's face it, Mussina is old, and Andy and Wang have had serious arm trouble in the past. If Randy is healthy and able to give us 200+ innings, why trade him? It almost forces us to go out and overpay for Zito for five seasons.

I say go for Zito. You know what your getting. He's reliable - never missed a start. He's in his prime.

Sure Johnson got 17 wins the last 2 seasons but his era has been up each year. How many of those wins did he give up 5+ runs a lot.

Complain all you want but is $16 million for a 5.00era, a bad back worth it? I think not.

Allahu Akbar. May he and Bonds roast in something akin to Hell.
