Yankees News

Free agent pitcher Andy Pettitte, after agreeing to a deal with the Yankees:
"It shocked me that (the Astros) would not continue to go up, when the Yankees continued to push and push and pursue and they (the Astros) really didn't do much." Full story

The Yankees have until Dec. 28 to sign Japanese lefty Kei Igawa, whom they won exclusive rights to sign in the posting process. "We are making good progress," agent Arn Tellem said in a statement from his office, "however, I do not anticipate reaching a deal this week."

Johnny Damon said he would be willing to play some first base -- he played the position for the first time last July 18 in extra innings -- if that would help bring Bernie Williams back. But Damon also said Melky Cabrera should get to play "120-130 games." The Yankees say they have not decided if they have room on the roster for Williams, who stands to be the fifth outfielder. "Bernie Williams only deserves to be in a Yankee uniform," Damon said. "If I have to go play first base, I'll do it for a few games here and there just so we can work Bernie in." Cabrera is the backup to Damon, Hideki Matsui in left and Bobby Abreu in right.

Before the Yankees make Doug Mientkiewicz a contract offer they want to see the medical report from Dr. Robert Watkins who operated on the first baseman's back. If the Yankees' medical staff likes what it sees and hears from Watkins, the Yankees could offer Mientkiewicz a one-year deal to play first and bat in the lower third of the lineup. He earned $1.85 million last year with the Royals when he hit .283 in 91 games.
