Trade Randy?

That seems to be the question of the moment. What does it mean? Will we plunge into the Zito race if we do? Is Cashman still thinking Proctor or Karstens in the fifth spot? Does he have confidence in Pavano?

It's a strange trade possibility, considering how our starting pitching remains shallow and Arizona has little to offer on the big league level.

Yankees News

Install the Yankees as the favorite to land Roger Clemens when the Hall of Fame hurler decides to resume pitching. With golf partner and close friend Andy Pettitte officially returning to The Bronx, the Yankees will be appealing to Clemens, who Pettitte predicted will surface at some point in the 2008 season. Speaking on a conference call yesterday from Houston, Pettitte said he believes Clemens will pitch in 2007 even though Pettitte said Clemens hasn't told him what his decision will be. "I would have to imagine he is going to play," said Pettitte. ... When Clemens, who will be 45 in August, decides to pitch again, it will likely be for the second half of the season, as he did last year, and be a three-horse race with the Yankees, Red Sox and Astros entered. However, the Yankees employ his closest friend in baseball, always make the postseason and may allow Clemens to get home to Houston when his schedule dictates.

Shea Hillenbrand said he was told the Yankees are not interested in signing him to play first base because of concerns about his defense. "It just baffles me that organizations have that perspective on me," said Hillenbrand, who denied he was holding out for a multiyear deal. The Yankees also seemed to have cooled on signing Mark Loretta to play first base, so they may be zeroing in on Doug Mientkiewicz.

Brian Cashman said he hasn't had contact with Bernie Williams or agent Scott Boras recently. As currently constructed, the Yankees don't have a spot for the Yankee icon to return to.

An industry source close to the Pirates said that a three-team trade involving the Yankees and Braves -- one that would have sent Mike Gonzalez to New York, Adam LaRoche to Pittsburgh and Melky Cabrera to Atlanta -- was "pretty much a done deal" until last weekend. But he added, "I don't know what happened from there." No officials with the Pirates or Braves have acknowledged any three-team talks, publicly or privately. The Boston Red Sox have maintained interest in Gonzalez, but they have no good match for a power hitter and, thus, little chance of getting him.

Andy Pettitte's deal calls for a $16 million salary in 2007 and a player option at $16 million for 2008. Pettitte, 34, said he wanted the player option because he doesn't want to face the "nightmare" of free agency again nor feel obligated to pitch in 2008. He wanted to have a choice after next season: retire because he physically cannot pitch anymore or play one more year. Pettitte could exercise the option even if injured, but he has said he would not do that. "It's not something you would enter easily," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said of the player option. "But there's a lot of trust with Andy."

Igawa signed

Read about it here.

From the article:

"Igawa was 14-9 with a 2.97 ERA in Japan last season. He won the Central League MVP in 2003 when he was 20-5 with a 2.80 ERA."

He also led the league in strikeouts last year, I believe. So I don't think this guy is a pushover. Let's hope he's no Irabu.

Please don't trade Melky

Why are they discussing this? Haven't the Yankees learned that we need to keep are young players?

Free agent pitcher Andy Pettitte, after agreeing to a deal with the Yankees:
"It shocked me that (the Astros) would not continue to go up, when the Yankees continued to push and push and pursue and they (the Astros) really didn't do much." Full story

Aaron Guiel We Hardly Knew You
The New York Yankees didn't plan to offer outfielder Aaron Guiel a contract by Tuesday night's deadline, making him a free agent. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6266002

Yankee Suspended
New York Yankees pitching prospect Hector Noesi was suspended Thursday for the first 50 games of next season after testing positive for a banned performance-enhancing substance under baseball's minor league drug program. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6272158

The Yankees have until Dec. 28 to sign Japanese lefty Kei Igawa, whom they won exclusive rights to sign in the posting process. "We are making good progress," agent Arn Tellem said in a statement from his office, "however, I do not anticipate reaching a deal this week."

Johnny Damon said he would be willing to play some first base -- he played the position for the first time last July 18 in extra innings -- if that would help bring Bernie Williams back. But Damon also said Melky Cabrera should get to play "120-130 games." The Yankees say they have not decided if they have room on the roster for Williams, who stands to be the fifth outfielder. "Bernie Williams only deserves to be in a Yankee uniform," Damon said. "If I have to go play first base, I'll do it for a few games here and there just so we can work Bernie in." Cabrera is the backup to Damon, Hideki Matsui in left and Bobby Abreu in right.

Before the Yankees make Doug Mientkiewicz a contract offer they want to see the medical report from Dr. Robert Watkins who operated on the first baseman's back. If the Yankees' medical staff likes what it sees and hears from Watkins, the Yankees could offer Mientkiewicz a one-year deal to play first and bat in the lower third of the lineup. He earned $1.85 million last year with the Royals when he hit .283 in 91 games.

Andy Pettitte Upset Former Team Didn't Try Harder

Does any of this silliness sound familiar to you?

This guy is a perpetual crybaby.

I AM BEFORE YOU WEEPING WITH JOY

A great day indeed!

Pettitte or bust

Well, Lilly is gone, Meche is gone, Garcia is gone, Schmidt is gone, and we're not interested in Zito.

It looks like it's Pettitte or nobody. My feeling is that this must be close to a done deal or we wouldn't have let everyone pass.

I would also like to say that had we shown Andy this kind of love after 2003, we would probably have another World Series under our belt and wouldn't have been subject to the greastest collapse in the history of sports.

Lookin up.

Great news.

Lilly and Pettitte...I love it.

Yankees News

As for the right-handed hitting first baseman, according to Shea Hillenbrand's representative, the Yankees have an interest. "We are having discussions, and [the Yankees] are one of the teams in the mix," Dan Lozano said. "We aren't as far along as we would like with all the teams but hopefully in the next couple of days we will have something." Initially, clubs believed the 31-year-old Hillenbrand was seeking a three-year deal. Lately the message is he might take a two-year pact. The Angels have an interest, but Hillenbrand lost a potential employer in the Dodgers when they re-signed Nomar Garciaparra.

And that's it right now.
