SHEFF WATCH- 2006

Gary Sheffield's time as a New York Yankee is now down to its final hours. Rumors are swirling about possible offers. One that I found particularly interesting is where San Diego sends us their set-up man Scott Linebrink. I really like Linebrink. You will too. Throw in a backup catcher or something reasonable, and you'll make this Yankee fan happy.

Oh and in case you haven't heard, the Mets like Moose. With Pedro possibly calling it a career if he doesn't get strong again, the bidding war on a guy like Moose might get ugly. We better wrap up that signing within days.

Looks like a good pitcher. Three straight solid seasons, his numbers are Shield-esque. I don't know anything about him, though, but I think trading Sheff for a good setup man is a solid move.

Fox's scouting report on Linebrink:

"Linebrink likes to work up in the zone, with a fastball that runs 94-97 MPH. He'll sink it occasionally, and work in a decent change and splitter to keep hitters from getting on top of it. The result usually is a popup or a lazy flyball. When he needs a strikeout, he'll pitch to the bottom of the zone as well, using his splitter to entice batters to chase. At the plate, he swings hard in case he makes contact. His style of pitching generally takes him out of the play, but he is surehanded when the ball does find him."

This sounds like a solid approach for the offseason.

Yeah,

Re-sign Moose, get Lilly, secure some bullpen help in a trade (Sheff) and buy out Wright if you get the Japanese kid (well, maybe buy him out anyways).

Potentially, the rotation will be:

Wang, Moose, Unit, Matsuzaka, Lilly, Pavano/Karstens/Hughes.

Looks like we may have to move a guy like Karstens in exchange for bullpen help, or move Karstens into the bullpen. I don't expect Pavano to be doing much for us. And this is a good time for Hughes to come up, with a good mix of veterans and Wang to ease him through the process.

Now that I think of it, Matsuzaka seems kind of extraneous to me.

He seems good, but the track record of pitchers coming over from the NL isn't great.
