I give you the 2006 Post-Season NY YANKEES

I posted the following projected lineup right after we acquired Abreu on 7/31/06:

CF
Johnny Damon
SS Derek Jeter
1B Jason Giambi
DH Gary Sheffield
RF Bobby Abreu
3B Alex Rodriguez
LF Hideki Matsui
C Jorge Posada
2B Robinson Cano

That's firepower.

When someone comes up to you (while you're wearing a Yankee cap) and scoffs at this gaudy lineup, you do the right thing and smack them in the face. This is a once-in-a-lifetime assembly of hitting talent. Discuss.

I won't wear my Yankee hat out of embarassment if we field that lineup, so I don't have to worry about it.

Shame on anyone hides their Yankee pride! SHAME!

What's the timetable on Sheff's return?

He's taking batting practice now. There are 17 games left, so he's on a tight schedule. So it's possible that he won't be back or won't be available for anything other than pinch hitting come the postseason.

But really, I don't want him back. We went into the postseason the past two seasons with "three run homerun" lineups and they didn't execute. As it now stands, Giambi and A-Rod are both slumping. Add another rusty slugger to that mix, and you'll see problems.

Plus, I think it's just excessive. What's the fun of being that much better than everyone else? Winning under those circumstances proves nothing.

If the Yankees have the lineup you described, I'm rooting against the Yankees in the AL. If they make the Series against the Mets, I'll have to support them, I suppose.

Wow.

Who kidnapped Anthony and replaced him with Jimmy Carter?

It's not like like we're talking about national greatness here, we're talking about the willingness of one old man to outspend everyone else year after year, and it's only getting worse. Yes, I must admit, I feel some shame about that and I think it takes some fun out of it.

Great article about Jim Kaat in the Post. He will be missed.

Fix that link, Steiner! All its doing is reloading this page. As an aside, someone told me they waited on Kaat at a restaurant once and he left the waiter a ten-cent tip. I hope he rots in Boca Raton.

As for outspending everyone year after year, since our payroll crossed the $100 million/year mark, we have not won a single championship (2001). You said it yourself, we don't seem to win with "three run homerun" guys, so what's there to be ashamed of? Certainly we've proven you cannot "buy" a championship these past few years. What's the concern? Besides, the addition of Sheffield to the lineup does not make us any more gaudy than we already appear, especially with Abreu on the roster. I don't see a larger payroll making a difference in the postseason. I think you can rack up a lot of regular season wins with a talented team, but are we a lock to go to the WS? Nope. We're gonna have to fight for it as hard as the rest of the field.

The fact that we haven't won doesn't make it better, but worse. It shows gluttony and incomptence. But with the addition of Matsui and Sheff we've never had anything like this team. We literally have an allstar at every position. If the Yankees don't win, it will be pathetic. If they do, it can be dismissed as something akin to Germany invading Poland.

Well, I'm Polish, boys. Go Tigers/Twins/A's.
