GET WELLS

ESPN says the Sox are shopping him. He's pitched well over his last four starts. He's way ahead of Lidle and Wright for our fourth spot. The Red Sox are out of it and they know it.

I say we do what we have to (which won't be much) to get David Wells.

Thoughts?

I dunno about Wells. Won't the Yankees just need four starters for the playoffs. Should we just bring in Wells to be that starter? Will Mussina be ready?

I don't want to give up Phillips or Cabrera for an old fourth starter that the Yankees will just release in two months. Lidle will be fine.

I'm counting on Mussina, Johnson, and Wang. When I mentioned picking up Wells to my father last night he scoffed, asking why I would want him. I replied, "Don't you think he's better than Lidle or Wright?" His response: "Well, when you put it that way."

We would be getting Wells to be our fourth starter in the playoffs, period. We would have to give up practically nothing, I'd guess. Much less than Cabrera or even Phillips (but they can have Phillips, he's not al ong term major leaguer in my opinion). He's pitching wells of late and has playoff bona fides.

Get Wells!

Well, what does Boston need? I would say a third baseman in a few years. Bullpen help, and starting pitching help.

What prospects in the way of pitching could we give up?

I think you guys are making this too complicated. Boston wants to dump Wells. They want to save a million bucks or whatever. I don't think they'd demand anything. Maybe a mid-range prospect we've never heard of. The real question is whether they'd trade him to the Yankees and whether we'd want him. He didn't leave on the best of terms. But I think it would be beneficial--not to mention fun--to get him.

I was at the Triple-A Mets game the other night (Tidewater Tides) and I was within spitting distance of Kelly Stinnett. I can tell you he is very fit and handsome up close. Television adds about 50 lbs. on him.

As for Wells, I think its a fantastic idea bringing him back. I'm not terribly upset with our starting rotation, but I would feel more comfrotable with Wells than Wright or Lidle. Now to be fair, I think Wright deserves credit for turning it around in a big way... BUT even Wright's best these days is mediocre at best. When I watched Wells' start against us a couple of weeks ago, I saw a gutsy pitcher throwing good pitches and keeping his team in the game throughout. Was Wells served well by the fact that the Yanks were probably exhausted for that Monday day game? Probably. Was Wells served well by the fact that Fasano and Green were in the lineup? Yes. And with all of that taken into account, I am still high on Wells as a pitcher. He hasn't had to go through a grueling season like most other starters. He's relatively fresh in that regard. And add to that he's an experienced big-game pitcher, I cannot see any reason why we shouldn't add him to the roster.

It's funny to say this about the guy, but David Wells is a stablizing force for the NY Yankees.

Dumb loss last night. Mo couldn't throw to one batter? Or Farnsworth? Proctor is sliding again after a month of good pitching.
