He also led the league in strikeouts last year, I believe. So I don't think this guy is a pushover. Let's hope he's no Irabu.

I don't know if Bernie really adds anything this year. Surely we'd rather have Melky get 350 or so abs and some outfield time, even if it means not signing Bernie. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens to Melky as far as a trade.
You're right, which is why Bernie should think about retirement.
The problem with Bernie being the fifth outfielder is two fold. First off, your ideal fifth outfielder can field and pinch run. Bernie does not do either well anymore. Second, the fifth outfielder should expect to get about 150 at bats. Would Bernie accept that? Would he be effective in such a limited role?
But maybe you're right, it's not the most important position, he would have more stick than your typical fifth outfielder, so I wouldn't be opposed to him playing in the position if he'd take it. What I'm opposed to it trading Melky just to make room for Bernie as the fourth outfielder, a role that--last year's solid performance notwithstanding--is probably beyond him at this point.
Well I don't think they would trade Cabrera just to make room for Bernie as a fourth outfielder. They probably will trade him for a solid middle reliever though. And then sign someone else to fill that role.
Bernie shouldn't be the fourth outfielder because that position usually does get alot of playing time (I think Dodort first pointed that out). Bernie will accept his role, retire, or play for someone else.
And if he doesn't who cares, he'll go quietly, peacefully. But if he doesn't, Steiner, he would have touched the hearts of millions of registered all star voters.
