Gammons near death

Peter Gammons had emergency surgery today for a brain aneurysm discovered this morning. This could be the end of an era. There has been no one like Gammons.

Peter Gammons IS certainly one of the greatest sports writers of all time, well at least in my generation.

Here's his induction speech. Reading it brings back memories, and a tear to my eye.

Hopefully he will recover with all facilities, and continue loving and writing about the game.

The report is that he is in good condition in the ICU now, so hopefully he'll recover and be back on the sidelines soon.

Gammons is so much of an institution in the game, that I simply can't imagine following baseball without seeing Peter's reports and reading his "Grapes of Wrath" size reports covering every possible fasset of the game.

When I was in 9th grade, I joined the golf team. The upperclassmen, overhearing my baseball shop talk one too many times, nicknamed me "Peter Gammons," and it stuck with that crowd until they graduated. The funny thing was, they would never just say "Gammons," but always "Peter Gammons." Like "Hey, Peter Gammons, what did you get on that whole?" or "Hey, Peter Gammons, nice pitch for eagle." He's always been my favorite. May God grant him a speedy and complete recovery.

Ordinary Guy, for all we know about you, J.G. Spink himself might have been the best sports writers of your generation. We're taking bets at the office, and my money is on your being a 63 year old retired trapeze artist.

As well respected as Gammons is among all baseball fans, he's absolutly worshiped in Boston, where he writes his column. The Sox did a nice thing last night by having that giant get well card on the screen.

That's a tender story Steiner, although I can't help but doubt your "nice pitch for eagle" comment. You don't strike me as a 9th grade golf prodigy.
