Some news
On the trade front, perhaps another front line pitcher has become available.
Bernie went 5-5 this evening, raising his average to .294. He's also on pace for 15 homers and 85 rbis. It seems that sticking him in the outfield and leaving him alone--as some of us suggested be done last season--is paying off. I admit, however, that I thought he was finished a month ago. But if he can continue to be productive, then I don't think we need another outfielder and should concentrate on a middle reliever or starter.
Rivera threw two innings again tonight. I'd say that over the last two weeks he's had more 1+ inning appearances than one inning appearances. I guess there are two ways to look at this. One, it's bad, because he'll be out of gas by season's end. Two, he's athletic enough to hold up and by September he'll have built the stamina to do it without breaking a sweat. My money is on the former, only because he's 36 years old, but who knows.

I'd vote no on Smoltz. He's just too old. I don't care if he's healthy and can throw nine innings every start. I want the Yankees to pick up a young left-hander, an Andy Petitte type. Or a power throwing guy who can intimidate.
Enough of this: trading for guys who are past their primes.
Yes! Bernie, isn't it so sweet? The guy just refuses to die! I love it. When Bombers drafted him we all chuckled a little. But it was that kind of faith that has brought Bernie back. I'm not saying Bernie is reliving his prime, but this type of restoration could only happen under the influence of TAJT (and with the help of some injuries).
When a veteran as loved as Bernie Williams performs I recapture the magical days when I thought the Yankees couldn't lose. Even when they were down, I never counted them out. Players like Bernie and Jeter help me to remember forgotten heroes like Paul O'neill, John Wetteland, and Wade Boggs.
How many of you recall this statement by John Sterling.
Just press play
I remember everything about that night, where I was sitting, what beer I was drinking. Everyone who was there. All those years of bad seasons, the strike, the seattle debaucle finally came to a close when Wade Boggs got on top of that horse with his finger in the air.
Joe, we'd be getting Smotlz for half a season. You have to look at these potential trades as helping us immediately, not down the road. There will be plenty to time to make bids to Zito and whoever else in November.
And Smoltz is a power throwing guy who can intimidate.
I remember that night as well. I had watched some of the earlier games with the Hamm brothers. After the Yankees won, I ran up to their rooms and they were watching Backdraft. They were volunteer firefighters, allegedly, and that movie meant more to them. Fat twin bastards.
I know Smoltz throws hard, he's just old!! But he does want to play another year according to your article.
Those fat Hamms, bastards. But, man could they throw their weight around on the basketball court.
I agree with Steiner. The Yankees need to improve at this moment. And Smoltz can sure help them. He's a hard throwing right hander with grit and tons of playoff experience. If I'm not mistaken I think he owns the best post season record of all time (don't quote OG on that).
Of course the Yankees will have to split his $11M salary with the Braves, and possibly chalk up some decent prospects (who?). But I don't think old Smoltzy will want to leave the Braves. He seems the type that appreciates the nostalgia when a ballplayer stays with same club all his career.
Who else is in a contract year?
OG, I'm not sure. Free agency is usually Adam's department, but he's been MIA. Adam was a good man. Used to be a regular contributer. You would have liked him. But he's gone now.
But I appreciate the support of ordinary people everywhere.
"Those fat Hamms, bastards." A subtle reference to Christmas Story, Joey boy?
