A-Rod: Starting to get sickening
Catch the walk away line in this Times article on yesterday's tough loss.
Ahh, hell, I'll just put it up for you:
"Rodriguez seemed to be prepared to accept whatever fate had in store, come what may. 'If we win, we win; if we don’t, we don’t,' he said. 'It’s not the end of the world.'"
WHAT? I mean, granted, if we lose it's not the end of the world. That will come soon enough out of the Middle East. But come on, it's this guy's job to win. He's not a firefighter or a nurse. His profession is hardly necessary. So in the context of the baseball world, winning is all that matters. If the team doesn't win, why pay guys like A-Rod $20 million a year? Sheff and Matsui are probably pushing themselves to get back in time to make a difference, and this guy's attitude is take it or leave it. Unbelievable.

Pavano update from the Post:
"The Yankees are accelerating Carl Pavano's rehab program, and he remains convinced he'll play by September.
"Pavano, who hasn't thrown a major-league pitch in more than a year, will soon be cleared to throw breaking balls during his bullpen sessions. Previously, the oft-injured righty was only throwing fastballs since coming back from surgery to remove a bone chip."
Damn straight, Scooter. Even if Pavano comes back in late August, so what? He'll do nothing for us this season.
The same might apply to Dotel, as well, but at least he's been throwing in the minors for a month. Hopefully he can make a difference. The guy I think we should watch is Proctor, though. He's looked great since the break. If we can get one other guy going along with Villone and Myers, we might just be okay in the pen.
A-Rod needs a new therapist. There's a sign in the walkway between the clubhouse and the dugout at Yankee Stadium that reads the following: "There is no substitute for victory"--Douglas MacArthur. Maybe A-Fraud should read it sometime.
Can you believe the nerve of Pavano? I can see him sitting in front of the press. "Oh yeah, I'm certain I'll be back in September, and you can bet I'll be ready to carry this team to a world series."
He's "convinced" he'll play? Convinced? Are you kidding me! This almost makes me as angry as Bonds not being charged.
Anyways, we shouldn't have to worry about Carl. As Phil said, "He's a bum" and I'll bet he re-injures his buttocks before the end of the month.
As for A-rod, why is he making these statements? Is he deliberately trying to annoy the Yankee Kingdom? Maybe the pressure is really getting to him. I can't believe a guy with such talent, such amazing ability, cannot find a way to control his emotions, and his mouth. He needs a tongue lashing from Torre, and maybe some of the other veterans in that clubhouse. But, I'm sure the whole club walks on eggshells around him. TAJT should stop "managing egos" and start laying down some ground rules.
Tonight's loss was a tough one. We're missing punch. I'm getting off the fence. We need a hitter. We need Bobby Abreu. All right you sons of bitches, that how I feel.
PS: Proctor has definitely turned it around...
I'm not sure of Sheff's free agent status next season (he is a free agent, but the Yankees may have an option), but it's an interesting question. We are big fans of OPS as a meaningful statistic here at Steiner's Warriors, and they are remarkable similiar in that category, Sheff at .923 and Abreu at .921. Abreu is also five years younger than Sheff, 32 to 37. Abreu also continues to steal 30 bases a year. But I don't think he's got the competitive drive of Sheffield, but on the other hand I don't know anything about him. I think a lot of it would depend on how Bobby played in NY if he got him and how healthy Sheff was in September.
As for this season, though, trading for Abreu and the return of Sheff and Matsui pushed Bernie right out of a job. He's done so well that that's a little sad, but it's probably also what's best for the Yankees. Having someone like Bernie off the bench in October would be big. But, I fear that we need to do something now or October may not matter. Currently 2.5 down from both the Soxes...
The Post blames A-Rod for last night's lost. I guess he had a big throwing error in the sixth, his fourth this week...
